Paris Freed by F.F.I.

Some 50,000 French Forces of the Interior fighters liberated Paris four days before the Americans arrived, seizing public buildings and Vichy officials, though German troops broke the armistice and resumed fighting for the city, prompting the FFI to call for Allied help.

Roumania Signs Peace Pact With Russia, England, U.S.

King Michael announced Romania’s unconditional acceptance of Allied armistice terms and its intention to fight against the Nazis, with a new democratic government formed that excludes Premier Antonescu. The capitulation followed a rapid two-pronged Red Army drive into the heart of the country.

Krauts Hitch-Hike to PW Enclosure

A messenger jeep driver from New Jersey was flagged down by twelve German soldiers who wanted a lift to the prisoner-of-war pen; after delivering his message first, he came back to find them patiently waiting and ferried them in two trips to the military police.

Ebner’s Unaware He’s Patrolling

An Ohio technical sergeant searching for his battalion command post drove 100 yards down the wrong road before turning back, and when a captain asked what was up that way, the officer thanked him for scouting it and said he’d been about to send a patrol there.

Hot Bread Cheers GI’s A Few Days After D Day

Six battalion cooks and two Frenchmen took over an old-fashioned bakery in a small town three days after the landings and, working through the night by hand, turned out nearly 500 loaves for about a thousand infantrymen, even capturing a German sniper along the way.

Mine Detector Has New Job

A puzzled captain stopped to ask why a private was sweeping a mine detector back and forth across a road where there were no mines; the Minneapolis artilleryman explained he’d lost his ring in the dust and kept searching.

Up Front by Mauldin

Bill Mauldin’s cartoon shows his two bedraggled GIs, Willie and Joe, being stared at by bespectacled French locals as one remarks that this is the town his father told him about from the last war.

A Makeshift Edition

A note explains that this issue was a one-off produced jointly by Stars and Stripes and 45th Division News staff, unrelated to the regular paper, because combat troops needed news and the chance to print simply presented itself.
