Mit Gummizeug und Schwimmweste ausgerüstet gleitet er, von zwei Bällen getragen, am Seil entlang zum neuen Boot, das für seine
Ueberführung in ein Heimatlazarett sorgen wird.

Front Page: A man is hanging between two balls . . .
He carefully pulls himself through the sea.
A man is seriously ill on a submarine in action. Another boat heading home is immediately called by radio and a rope connection is quickly established. The sick man is carefully hoisted overboard. Equipped with rubber gear and a life jacket, he slides along the rope, carried by two balls, to the new boat, which will take him to a home hospital.

Nahkampf
Nicht die Maschine — der Kämpfer ist Herr des Schlachtfeldes

Feldwebel H. Träger des Deutschen Kreuzes in Gold und des Goldenen Verwundetenabzeichens, erhielt auch die Goldene Nahkampfspange. Die Verleihung der Nahkampispange erfolgt ,,an jeden Soldaten, der ungeschützt und zu Fuß sich vielfach im Nahkampl Mann gegen Mann, mit der Waffe in der Hand, seiner Aufgabe entsprechend bewährt hat.” Stiftungsurkunde vom 25. 11. 42.1 Die erste Stufe, in Bronze, wird für 15 Nahkampftage, die 2. Stufe, in Silber, für 30, die 3. Stufe in Gold, für 50 Nahkampitage verliehen. — So ist die Nahkampfspange vor allem die Ehrenauszeichnung des deutschen Grenadiers; denn noch immer ist die Infanterie die Königin des Schlachtfeldes — und die Maschinenfülle der modernen Schlacht ändert nichts an der ewigen Wahrheit, daß noch immer der Mann am Feind den Kampf entscheidet. Was dieser Kampf bedeutet, zeigen unsere Bilder.

Close Combat

Sergeant H., holder of the German Cross in Gold and the Golden Wound Badge, also received the Golden Close Combat Clasp. The Close Combat Clasp is awarded “to every soldier who, unprotected and on foot, has repeatedly proved himself in close combat, man to man, with a weapon in his hand, in accordance with his duty.” Foundation certificate dated November 25, 1942. The first level, in bronze, is awarded for 15 days of close combat, the second level, in silver, for 30, and the third level, in gold, for 50 days of close combat. — Thus the Close Combat Clasp is above all the honorary award of the German grenadier; for the infantry is still the queen of the battlefield — and the abundance of machinery in modern battle does not change the eternal truth that the man on the enemy still decides the battle. Our pictures show what this battle means.
