Trotzdem entschloss sich der Kommandant, die Unternehmung fortzusetzen. Er griff an, bis alle Torpedos verschossen waren. Weitere 35 000 BRT. feindlichen Schiffsraums lagen auf dem Meeresgrund. Das notduerftig reparierte, tauchbeschraenkte Boot brachte er aus den amerikanischen Gewassern zum heimatlichen Hafen zurueck.
