Hunter Field (now Hunter Army Airfield) in Savannah, Georgia, served as a U.S. Army Air Forces base during World War II, primarily used for heavy bomber training — notably B-17 Flying Fortress and later B-29 Superfortress crews — under the Third Air Force. It also played a role in anti-submarine patrols along the Atlantic coast earlier in the war, given Savannah’s proximity to shipping lanes threatened by German U-boats.
