During World War II, Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland served as the U.S. Army’s premier site for testing artillery, tanks, small arms, and ammunition, ensuring weapons were reliable before mass production and deployment. Its ballistics research required extensive calculations for firing tables, a need that helped drive development of the ENIAC, one of the world’s first electronic computers, completed in 1945. The facility also trained Ordnance Department personnel in weapons maintenance and repair.
