Description

Vol. 2 No. 12 ……. Cover: Here is one more step on the long road to Tokyo. This one, however, is more than just a symbol, it is literally helping to build a road. The picture shows a conveyor belt in an asphalt plant somewhere in the Marianas. Product of the plant is used to surface the long runways from which our big Superforts take off to go hurtling on a straight air road to the heart of Japan. The belching smoke from the chimneys of this plant is a necessary prelude to the pall of smoke that hangs over Honshu after the B-29’s have made a strike. At the throttle is T.5 Arthur Cook, Glenwood, N. Y. The picture was taken by Cpl Fred Shelton. ……. Articles Inside: … Iwo Alarm Clocks – Sleepless Japs on Iwo Jima, pounded daily for months, have come to regard regularly scheduled, night-long snooper bombings as the crowning indignity. By Pfc Richard L. Dugan and photos by Cpl. Paul Friend ….. Combat Camera. By Zander Hollander and photos by Pvt. John Modzelewski ….. Honshu Express – It’s a fourteen-and-a-half-hour round trip, and you never know what you’ll run into at the end of the line. But the Honshu Express always delivers a payload where it counts. By PFC Bud Nelson and photos by Sgt. Henry B. Krush and Cpl. Fred Shelton ….. patent NOT pending ….. Editorial – One War – Best Damed Bomber ….. Forward Echelon – Notes from the foxholes, bomb statistics and mission reports which detail, in part, AAFPOA’s war record from Oahu to Palau. Photos by Cpl. Lyle D. Strain and Cpl. Fred Shelton ….. Good Humor squad ( Ice Cream ) ….. Birthday ( 11th Bombardment Group is five years old ) ….. One damned island after another. By PFC Bud Nelson ….. Sports Edited by Zander Hollander ….. File 13 By Sgt. Roger Angell ….. Male Call “Is He Trapped Or Is She A Mouse?” by Milton Caniff ….. Close – but no cigar ( Close calls by shrapnel ) ….. Brief pinup – This is the second time around for Yvonne DeCarlo, the lush young lovely who decorates this week’s back cover. Her last appearance, tastefully draped in a fish-net, hooked so many soldiers that they demanded an encore. Miss DeCarlo, who almost always goes in for nautical backgrounds when posing for her picture, has probably done more for the bathing suit industry than that guy Jantzen. The particular number she is wearing here, what there is of it, is known as a “diaper” suit. You might think she is a little old to go in for that sort of thing, but you will have to admit it is not often you come across a more beautiful baby.
