38th Infantry Division

Nickname: Cyclone Division. During WWI training at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, a storm leveled the tent city, earning the 38th its “Cyclone” nickname. After Bataan in WWII, it became known as “Avengers of Bataan.”
Shoulder Patch: A shield split vertically into red and blue, with interlocked white “C” and “Y” letters in the center. A “Avengers of Bataan” scroll was added above after Bataan.

History: Organized and trained at Camp Shelby, Mississippi; deployed overseas Sept.–Oct. 1918 (WWI), returning and demobilizing by June 1918 (never saw action as a division in France). Notable unit lineage: the 149th Infantry traces to Daniel Boone’s 2nd Kentucky Infantry; the 138th FA Battalion to George Rogers Clark’s 1st Kentucky Infantry; the 152nd Infantry to the 2nd Indiana Regiment (Tippecanoe).
WWII Training: Inducted Jan. 17, 1941. Trained at Camp Shelby; Third Army maneuvers in Louisiana (Sept. 1941). Joined AGF and IV Corps, Third Army (Mar. 1942); more Louisiana maneuvers (Sept. 1942); amphibious training in Carrabelle, FL (Nov. 1942); Camp Livingston, LA (Mar. 1943). Supplied 8 cadres, parts of 14 tank forces, and 4,000–5,000 officer candidates. Deployed overseas Dec. 1943.

Component Units (Dec. 1943): 149th, 151st, and 152nd Infantry Regiments; 138th, 139th, 163rd (L), and 150th (M) FA Battalions. Higher Command: Eighth Army.
Combat Highlights: Fighting centered on Bataan and NE of Manila, starting Dec. 7, 1944, including Leyte (mop-up), Subic Bay, Zig-Zag Pass, Mariveles (amphibious landing), the March-of-Death route (Balanga, Pilar, Bagac), Corregidor, the Zambales Mountains, Caballo/Fort Drum/Carabao Islands, the Marikina watershed, the Sierra Madre Mountains and Shimbu Line, the Marikina River line, and the capture of Wawa Dam.
