Vol. 2 No. 2 ... The Flying Training Command's New Weapon ....... Cover : Air Cadet ..... Air Cadet John J. Casper, former garage mechanic of Stratford, Conn., is shown toting 100 rounds of 30-caliber ammunition to his plane at Matagorda Island, Tex., where he trains to be a fighter pilot. The course at Matagorda, which lasts 14 days, include: firing at fixed and moving targets, strafing tactics and formation flying. He wears a Mae West, and the rounds in his hands are painted an assigned color so that his hits on the target can be recorded. For story on the Flying Training Command, see page 8.

It was from such desert airfields that thousands of U.S. planes launched the air attacks that did so much to drive the Axis from Africa.

Pete Paris, YANK staff photographer, snapped this picture of an artilleryman in the 1st Division near Troina, where those veterans from Tunisia fought one of the toughest engagements of the Sicilian campaign. The soldier is squinting through an aiming circle to make sure it is okay before setting it up for the executive officer to lay the guns in the battery. U. S. artillery did a great job in Sicily.

Mex., holds a "home-made" weapon at the Ranger and Combat School in Hawaii. Before "students" were graduated, they were required to fashion an original weapon capable of killing a man. Joe Commiskey of Springfield, Mass., was baked for the stomachs of the hungry members of the Air Forces' famed 57th Fighter Group. As soon as the bread supply arrived from the field bakery, Joe moved it to the 57th's pantry.

Archie McLean of Rhodes, Mich., looks like a man who has been to the wars. And he has. Already a veteran of the fighting on Guadalcanal, he fought the Jap again in New Georgia. In the battle near Munda, described by YANK's Sgt. Mack Morriss (beginning on page 3), McLean's squad of riflemen had the job of protecting machine-gun crews.

Vol. 2 No. 18 ... A Nine-Month Detail on the Greenland Icecap ....... Cover : Pvt. Snafu ..... THE latrine orderly who feels so bad about his job is none other than your old friend, Pvt. Snafu, star of the Gl newsreel. Army and Navy Screen Magazine. He's been in YANK before, notably last July, when he encountered a spy. The sculpture on the cover is the work of T-3 Raymond F. Harryhausen and Pvt. Eugene S. Fleury, both of the 834th Signal Photo Detachment, Hollywood, Calif. For an additional look at Snafu in action, turn to page 9.

Vol. 2 No. 19 ... A Liberator Looks For Trouble Near Rabaul ....... Cover : The Latin-American Way ..... The GI carrying his barracks bag in true Latin-American style on the cover is S/Sgt. Renier Mendez, one of the native soldiers training at Camp Tortuguero, Puerto Rico. Puerto Rican troops like everything in the U. S. Army but issued chow. Their mess sergeants turn out instead their own spicy Latin dishes.

Vol. 2 No. 20 ... Cover : Firing Squad Executes Two German Spies ..... The climactic photograph in the remarkable series of pictures appearing on pages 2, 3 and 4 was made by YANK's Sgt. George Aarons, in Aleppo, Syria, just as the bullets from the rifles of a French firing squad struck the bodies of two Nazi spies. The legs of the spy at the left buckle as the top of the stake to which he is bound falls, sheared off by slugs. The man at right slumps to the ground. Behind each stake a cloud of smoke can be seen.

Vol. 2 No. 22 ... Five-Day Attack on the Japs at Hastings Ridge ....... Cover : They Got 5 Zeros In China ..... There is good reason for this exchange of congratulation "somewhere in China." Sgt. Charles Patton of Dallas, Tex., and Sgt. Marino Galluzzo (right) of Uniontown, Pa., both gunners, had just returned from a bombing raid on Hankow. Patton shot down three Zero fighters; Galluzzo, flying his first combat mission, got himself two of the Zekes.

John Bushemi has caught the tenseness of fighting men moving forward, expecting to be fired on at any moment - and ready to reply. Bushemi made the picture as American troops engaged in mop-up operations against the Japanese an Arundel and Sagekarsa islands. Now turn to pages 12 and 13 for additional photographs.

Vol. 2 No. 24 ... Enlisted Men From Overseas at West Point ....... Cover: ( Second Version Cover ) Emergency Style ..... Maybe like a lot of other soldiers you thought Hollywood was the only place where they handled machine guns in this fashion. Wrong. Down at Camp Campbell, Ky., Sgt. Grover K. Herren, 480th Armored Infantry Regiment, 20th Armored Division, demonstrates the proper position for emergency firing of the caliber .30 at aircraft. Herren says the barrel isn't too hot to handle until 200 rounds have been fired.

Cover : The lookout silhouetted on the cover is standing on the bridge of an American submarine, one of our underwater prowlers that have taken such a cheerful toll of Jap shipping. He studies the sky as well as the sea, for the airplane is a deadly enemy of the sub. More submarine pictures are on pages 12 and 13. All are Official U. S. Navy photos.

The natives of Fiji and the Yanks have become very friendly, so it's no surprise to see this soldier teaching the bula boy the art of blowing the bugle, even to the extent of a sympathetic bulging of the cheek, for a Gl visit to the capital city of Suva on Saturday, the week's big day, see pages 12, 13.

Vol. 2 No. 28 ... Pictures of "Fighting 69th" in Invasion of Makin ....... Cover : On his first night in a foxhole on Makin, Pfc. James McClure heard something moving. He didn't ask questions. He shot. The next morning McClure, of the 165th Infantry, was still there with a dead Jap nearby as mute testimony to his good judgment and aim.
