Vol. II No. 1 ....... Cover: The photographer who took this month's cover was a little out out of his specialty when he made the picture, but Charles Cignatta has a lot of specialties and not all of them concern photography. Motion pictures occupy much of his time and he takes nearly all of the movies made in the plant. Outside of working hours, he is a connoisseur of classical music, Italian cooking and water skiing. He also started horseback riding, but three spills somewhat dampened his ardor for that recreation. ....... Articles Inside: ... Informal Efficiency, Inc. ( James C. Scott ) ..... Cover: During the Middle Ages when battle was waged on a man-to-man basis and the chief weapon was the sword, the armorers of ancient Toledo in Spain made the finest, most flexible, most durable of them all. His work has frequently appeared in this magazine in the form of pen-and-ink sketches and numerous lay-outs, but this is his first color assignment, though by no means his last. A native of Baltimore and a graduate of the Polytechnic Institute. Vol. II No. 9 ....... Cover: If you want to know how a bombardier looks when his ship is on its bombing run, study the cover of this month's Star closely. Seated in the nose of an A-30 Baltimore is Lieut. William W. Wilson, Air Transport Command. Ferrying Division, and Assistant Control Officer at the Martin Airport. Complete with throat mike, bomb release button, bomb sight and the other paraphernalia of his trade, Lieut. Wilson is just at the point of releasing his deadly load on the enemy below. The picture was taken on the flight line. The back cover is a picture of a group of B-26 Marauders returning to their North African base after a raid on Sicily, a picture only recently received in this country and one of the best showing Marauders in mass flight over enemy territory. ....... Vol. II No. 10 ....... Cover: The PBM-3 nicknamed "Nickle Boat" has had quite an adventurous career with the United States Navy, as told in the story beginning on Page 6. When returned to the factory recently, Photographer Charles Cignatta had a Roman holiday taking pictures of the ship from every conceivable angle. It was more than taking pictures, though, as Charlie was using a new film, Auscocolor, with which he had been experimenting. That his experiments were successful is evidenced by the cover shot. Others you'll undoubtedly see from time to time in various publications. Incidentally, we forgot to credit Charlie with the swell color shot on the October issue of The Star. Vol. II No. 11 ....... Cover: The cover on this month's STAR was taken through the open bomb bay of an Army Air Forces plane in a recent raid on Italy and is an exceptionally clear shot. A stick of bombs has just been released, two of them not having yet fallen far enough to be out of the shadow cast by the plane's wings, while a third is just emerging into daylight. It is operations such as this, thousands upon thousands of them, that spearheaded the Allied attack during the second year of the war, and are bringing ever closer the day of victory. ....... Vol. II No. 12 ....... Cover: The picture on the front cover is another of those combined efforts of The STAR's indefatigable photographers Charles Cignatta and Fred Parker. Both were in the camera ship while the Mars was making its famous 32 hour test flight recently, both madly snapping picture in black and white and in kodachrome. Which one took the picture is unknown. The drawing on the back cover was made by John T.
